His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Emory University
My friend Elaine writes that her son, who was there, particularly recommends the “Summit on Religion, Conflict and Peacebuilding” Get past the crowd noise and formal intros at the start and just keep going. Afterwards there are some great talks not only from His Holiness, but from representatives of other faiths as well.
On Oct 21 HHDL gave an introductory teaching on Buddhism, which Elaine’s son said was very good (and not all that introductory).
ABOUT EMORY UNIVERSITY (from their site)
Originally founded by the Methodist Church in 1836. Led by President James W. Wagner, the University has 11,300 students and 2,500 faculty members who represent all regions of the United States and more than 100 foreign nations.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s visit to Emory University is the only stop in the southern United States on His Holiness’ 2007 tour. (See links on their site to learn more about His Holiness, the Professorship, and the Emory-Tibet Partnership.)
Emory is one of the leading centers of study of Tibetan philosophy and religion in the West, primarily due to the university’s relationship with Tibetan Buddhist institutes of higher learning based in India (including the Drepung Loseling Monastery and the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamsala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile). One of the projects of this partnership is a comprehensive science education curriculum for Tibetan monastics.
The University consists of two liberal arts colleges located in Atlanta and Oxford, Georgia; a graduate school, professional schools of medicine, theology, law, nursing, public health and business, and one of the leading health care systems in the Southeast.
