Compassionate Grandmother of Cookie Sutra by Judy Tart

Judy Tart, my Rigpa sangha-sister, whom we’ve heard from before on two previous Riehlife posts as an eclectic reader and eco-activist, just got back from a 10 day vipassana retreat in Santa Barbara. Judy was gracious enough to share the Compassionate Grandmother of Cookie Sutra. Here is compassion practice with taste buds!

Judy says that the Compassionate Grandmother of Cookie Sutra “came to me just about verbatim during one afternoon sit when we were focussing on metta [loving-kindness meditation]. I was trying to make my practice a little more “juicy”, and I think I succeeded. Though I titled it a Sutra, it really follows the outline of your basic Tibetan Buddhist sadhana practice. And though there isn’t any such deity in the Buddhist pantheon, I believe it would be greatly enhanced by the addition of the Compassionate Grandmother!”

Compassionate Grandmother of Cookie Sutra by Judy Tart

The Compassionate Grandmother will never sleep nor cease baking cookies and rocking sentient beings, until every one is happy and content. Her fresh-baked cookies fill the universe.

She completely merges with me, and together we recite her mantra:

“May all beings have cookies, and the causes of cookies,
Be free from lack of cookies, and the causes of lack of cookies.

May they never be separated from the great cookie devoid of suffering,
And may they dwell in the Cozy Kitchen of the Compassionate Grandmother forever.”
